Major John Cheney

John Cheney was a well educated businessman living in Dixon, Illinois at the start of the Civil War.  In 1862 he raised Battery F of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery and served as it's captain.  Battery F fought in the western theatre with the Army of the Tennessee under both Generals Grant and Sherman.
