Frock Coat

The Enlisted Man's Frock Coat was the same cut as the officer's.  The difference between the two were the piping on the collar and the cuffs.  This color was the indication as to which branch of service the soldier served in.  The coat had 9 medium brass buttons down the front and two small buttons on each cuff.  On the figure above you will notice Brass  Scales on his shoulders.  These were attached at the collar with a brass pin though the seam in the coat and a small wool strap at the actual shoulder. The Federal Government purchased 1,881,727 Frock Coats between May of 1861 and June 1865.
